The Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) is a standardized coding system for the unique description of laboratory and clinical observations. The English master file was developed and is currently maintained with biannual updates by the Regenstrief Institute Inc, a non-profit research organization associated with the Indiana University (USA). The Italian version is realized by the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) of the National Research Council (CNR), through the LOINC Italia Working Group. The IIT, as per Memorandum of Understanding, is the official Italian partner of the Regenstrief Institute and, upon request, provides training courses for the correct use of the standard.
The Italian version of LOINC is updated every six months since 2010 and the latest release of June 2021 (LOINC 2.70) includes 83,784 codes, belonging to both clinical and laboratory sections.
LOINC use according to the DPCM on EHR:
In accordance with the Technical Regulation attached to the DPCM on the EHR, the LOINC standard has to be used within the Laboratory Report document in the following fields:
• Test specialty (also called Test class)
• Measurement result (intended as the test performed)
Some LOINC codes, belonging to the clinical section of the coding system, are also used to identify the type of document produced during the care episode and indexed in the EHR. They are detailed in the Affinity Domain document.
